The New Spam That’s Trashing Your Analytics
Analytics Spam (ugh!)
You might not even know you have it, but Analytics Spam (a.k.a. referral spam) is putting all kinds of crap in your stats. To see if you are a victim (and likely you are), just go to Acquisition > All Traffic > Referrals in your Google Analytics account.
Once you see your referrers, if any of the domains sound spammy, like:
- buttons-for-your-website.com
- simple-share-buttons.com
- Get-Free-Traffic-Now.com
- buy-cheap-online.info
then you’ve got referral spam. Please, please, fertheluvofgawd do NOT visit any of these sites. If you aren’t sure if one is legit or not, go to Google and type in “what is [insert domain here].” Then see if the domain shows up in referral spam sites or if it appears to be real.
Getting rid of the garbage data is the first hurdle to really being able to use the information Google Analytics is collecting for you. Maybe you didn’t even know analytics (a.k.a. referral spam) was a thing.
