attachments.me closingAlas, one of my favorite services, attachments.me, has announced they will be closing their virtual doors on November 11. I suspected this announcement might be coming when their Google Chrome extension wasn’t updated to work with the changing Gmail interface. Their closure announcement offers some alternatives like Yesware, IFTTT and Cloudly for Gmail. While all good services, none really lives up to the functionality and simplicity of attachments.me.

I started using the service after they launched 2.5 years ago to make file handling in Gmail tremendously easier. All Gmail attachments were scanned and available to search, view, sort and act on. Need to save all the files from an email to a specific cloud service? Done, with one click. Want any attachments from a specific sender automatically save to a folder? Easy, just set up a filing rule. The potential was huge and the convenience amazing. And, there was even an iPhone app. Attachments.me was one of the additional functions that put Gmail miles ahead of Outlook (in addition to Streak).

While there was no specific reason cited for the closure, it has been the fate of many “free-meium” service models that end up with too many free users and not enough paying ones to keep the lights on (and updates coming). While it doesn’t seem like there are many similar services out there, I’ll be trying MetisMe as it looks to at least search and easily save attachments from Gmail.

The full announcement regarding attachments.me closure is available on their blog.
